Note from Dr. Krans: GLG 321

Fall Semester 2023 GLG 321 (Mineralogy and Geochemistry):  The students in GLG 321 chose a pet mineral at the start of each semester- a tradition started (to the best of our knowledge) by Dr. Suki Dorfman (currently on sabbatical).  Throughout the semester, students had been researching aspects about their pet mineral in parallel with the concepts that were covered in class to present in small peer groups, where they received constructive feedback and learned about other cool minerals.

As a surprise, Dr. Krans had been collecting small mineral specimens ("thumbnails") of each student's pet mineral to gift to each of the students in honor of their time spent learning about thier pet mineral. She designed custom tags with GLG 321 (F23) to commemorate all their diligent work.

"It was an honor and pleasure to serve as a stand in for Dr. Dorfman - who has really developed this course into an awesome and challenging active learning environment.

All our students in EES are outstanding enthusiasts in the discipline and each provide unique opportunities for us (faculty) to learn and grow. Thank you EES students, for your questions, curiosity, and perspectives. You all 'rock'! Yes... I geology punned. Deal with it."
